INDems Announces Addition of Indiana Federation of Democratic Women on Party’s State Central Committee to Kick Off National Women’s History Month

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today celebrated the start of National Women’s History Month by announcing the formal addition of the Indiana Federation of Democratic Women (IFDW) as a council on the Party’s governing body known as the State Central Committee (SCC). While the SCC itself is gender balanced per Party rules, the IFDW joins a very robust and diverse coalition of constituency organizations that are aimed to engage all Hoosiers and communities across the state.

Hoosier women are the key to success for the Indiana Democratic Party, because their priorities too often align with the vision shared by common sense Hoosiers and Indiana Democrats. This vision includes measures like increasing the minimum wage for 892,000 low-income workers, demanding full and total funding for our public schools, providing a pay raise to our hardworking teachers, and implementing policy ideas that would secure better futures for all Hoosiers — such as decriminalizing cannabis.

The IFDW issued the following statement after it was announced last month during a SCC meeting the Federation was added as an advisory council:

“We are pleased to share the news with all that on Saturday, February 13, 2021, the Indiana Federation of Democratic Women was unanimously accepted as a Council to the Indiana State Democratic Central Committee representing the Democratic Women of Indiana.

As ambassadors of our Hoosier Democratic Women, the IFDW is not a private club but an organized federation that supports all Democratic Women in Indiana and the issues important to many women across the state, including raising the minimum wage and demanding total funding for our public schools. We give our assurance that we will attempt to represent all to the best of our ability.

As we thank the members of the Indiana State Democratic Central Committee, we give special Thanks to Cordelia Lewis-Burks for her continued support and leadership. Her friendship and mentoring have been invaluable to the Democratic Women in Indiana.”

The Indiana Democratic Party echoed the same excitement in the following statement:

“It was a pleasure to have cast my vote for the Indiana Federation of Democratic Women to become a Council Member of the Indiana Democratic Party. It is the Democratic Women across the state who have time and again been leaders in our Party’s effort to equalize rights and equity for some of the state’s most vulnerable communities, including women and low-income Hoosiers,” said Cordelia Lewis-Burks, Vice Chair of the Indiana Democratic Party. “Further, it has been Democratic Women who have fought for equal pay for women workers across our State, and it is past time the Indiana Federation of Democratic Women as an organization has a seat at the table.”

The Indiana Democratic Party’s constituency caucuses includes the Indiana Democrat African American Caucus (IDAAC), Indiana Latino Democratic Caucus, Indiana Stonewall Democrats, the Labor Caucus, Indiana Young Democrats, and College Democrats. The full list can be found on the Indiana Democratic Party’s website.

Let’s elect more Hoosier Democrats
We can't sit this one out.
