INDems Statement Celebrates Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Confirmation to U.S. Supreme Court

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today issued the following statement by Chairman Mike Schmuhl celebrating the U.S. Senate confirming Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court. By a bipartisan vote of 53-47, Justice Jackson is now the first Black woman to serve on the nation’s highest court – fulfilling yet another promise by President Joe Biden during the 2020 presidential election:

“History was made today in the United States, and true to his word, President Joe Biden fulfilled yet another campaign promise with the confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court. Justice Jackson was chosen after the President underwent a thorough and rigorous process to name a qualified nominee with strong experience, character, integrity, and dedication to the Constitution and the rule of law. The President knew choosing a Supreme Court nominee was one of the most serious decisions any president makes, and Jackson showed incredible grace, the depth and knowledge of the country’s legal system, and demonstrated excellent poise and temperament during what was an ugly partisan smear campaign – characteristics all required to serve on the nation’s highest court.

Unfortunately, Indiana’s U.S. Senators let their partisanship come before American history. Jackson met prerequisite standards asked by Todd Young and Mike Braun, but both politicians repeatedly shifted the goal posts to fulfill an partisan outcome that was predetermined the moment President Biden announced Jackson as his nominee. For Young and Braun, Justice Jackson’s confirmation process was more about political performance than fulfilling their constitutionally required duties. President Joe Biden and Democrats consistently prove to be the adults in the room and have plans to create a better future for all Americans, while unfortunately, the only plan Indiana Republicans have is their partisanship – an agenda that does not reflect the values of this nation.”
