UAW President Travels Across Indiana, Describes How Todd Young Would Devastate Hoosier Workers

UAW President Dennis Williams joined by local leaders and auto workers protesting Congressman Young for his policies that would deal major blow to auto industry, Hoosier middle-class

INDIANAPOLIS – Today, United Auto Workers’ (UAW) International President Dennis Williams traveled across Indiana highlighting Congressman Todd Young’s failure to support the auto rescue and the many ways Young has turned his back on Hoosier workers.

Williams was joined by local union leaders and UAW members in Fort Wayne, South Bend, Kokomo, and Indianapolis, as well as Mayor Greg Goodnight of Kokomo and Mayor Joe Hogsett of Indianapolis, as he discussed the clear choice facing Hoosiers in the U.S. Senate race.

Congressman Young has said that the auto industry should go “belly up” and called the auto rescue “a waste,” even though it saved 100,000 Hoosier jobs. Young has also praised bad trade deals that leave Hoosiers unprotected, voted to keep tax cuts for corporations shipping jobs overseas, and accepted campaign cash from Carrier’s parent company after it announced more than 2,000 layoffs here in Indiana due to outsourcing.

“Congressman Young has a history of siding with special interests in Washington while supporting policies that harm Hoosier workers,” said Dennis Williams, international president of the UAW. “He opposed the auto rescue, supports job-killing trade deals like the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and has voted against job training and assistance for Hoosiers—even when their jobs are outsourced to countries like Mexico and China. While Evan Bayh has spent his career standing up for Hoosier workers and fighting to save Hoosier jobs, Indiana workers simply can’t trust Todd Young to put them before his political career.”

In contrast, Evan Bayh has always had Hoosier workers’ backs, working with Republicans like Sen. Dick Lugar to save the auto industry and Hoosier jobs, and voting for the Trade Adjustment Assistance program (TAA), which provides retraining and assistance to workers who lose their jobs overseas.

Congressman Todd Young is no friend to Hoosier workers as he’s “philosophically opposed” to the TAA which has helped close to 30,000 Hoosiers since 2011.

Let’s elect more Hoosier Democrats
We can't sit this one out.
